Obama's Uncle Charged With Drunken Driving, Held by Immigration Officials

President Obama's uncle -- arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and held without bail on an immigration detainer, reportedly has had a Social Security card for the last 19 years.

Is the News over reporting hurricane Irene?

My local talk radio station was talking about the hurricane coverage for the east coast. They had people calling commenting about it. Should we be getting so much news coverage on the west coast since it doesn't affect us? Yes, it may be a big one, but that's part of living over there. 
As far as my thoughts, talk radio will beat anything to a pulp, so is this much different? It may be overkill, but I have many other listening options when one station gets old.

James Verone: The Medical Motive for his $1 Bank Robbery

James Verone said he hoped his $1 bank robbery would earn him a three-year jail sentence, during which he could undergo surgery on his back and his foot and have a painful lump on his chest diagnosed and treated. After that, the 59-year-old from Gastonia, N.C., would move to Myrtle Beach to collect his social security, he told local reporters.

But the charge Verone faces for the June 9 heist, larceny from a person, is unlikely to keep him behind bars for more than 12 months. He is being held in Gaston County Jail, where he has already been seen by several nurses, on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 28. And if his sentence is too short, Verone said he plans to rob again.

The robbery followed three years of hardship for Verone, who after losing his job of 17 years as a Coca-Cola delivery man tried desperately to land steady work, according to reports. But after short stints as a truck driver and a part time convenience store clerk, Verone was once again jobless, forced to live off savings and food stamps.

Without health insurance, Verone tolerated chronic back aches and a pain in his left foot that made him limp. But when he noticed a lump on his chest, he knew he had to do something.

"The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept," he told the Gaston Gazette. "I kind of hit a brick wall with everything."

Verone said he "exercised all the alternatives" before planning to rob the Gastonia bank, which he chose at random, for a dollar, according to reports. As the day approached, Verone paid his last month's rent, donated his furniture and moved into a Hampton Inn. And on the morning of June 9, before hailing a cab to the bank, he mailed a letter to the Gaston Gazette.

"When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar," he wrote, wanting people to understand that the motive for his crime was medical, not monetary. "I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."

At 1 pm, Verone handed a bank teller a note demanding a single dollar and claiming to have a gun. The teller who received his perplexing request made a frantic 911 call, and was later taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital for high blood pressure, according to local reports. Verone is said to be sorry for causing her any pain.

Verone, in contrast, waited calmly on a sofa in the bank's lobby for police to arrive.

"I didn't have any fears," Verone told local reporters. "If you don't have your health you don't have anything."

Put me in charge . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

JULY 4th

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;

Another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants,

Nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated

But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured..

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall , Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward,Rutledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr ., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying; their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free! I hope you will show your support by sending this to as many people as you can, please. It's time we get the word out that patriotism Is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

Why I hate Craigslist

I put a wanted ad in craigslist for an iPhone 3GS. This guy emails me and says he has one that has minor body damage. I ask for pictures as I usually do. After some conversation back and forth, he finally sends a picture. As you can see its some artwork hardly recognizable as a phone. These idiots, stammers, or whatever you want to call them, are the ones that make craigslist miserable.

A new review of popular multivitamins found that one in three did not contain the amount of nutrients claimed in their labels or improperly listed ingredients.
After testing 38 multivitamins for a new report published online this week,researchers at ConsumerLab.com discovered that eight contained too little of specific nutrients, two contained more nutrient than claimed and three improperly listed ingredients. The good news: some of the best vitamins were also the cheapest.
"We found a wide range in the quality of multivitamins," said Dr. Tod Cooperman,president of the company. "Interestingly,the more expensive products didn't fare any better than those that are just a few cents a day."
While medications are closely overseen by the federal Food and Drug Administration, supplements like vitamins don’t get regular testing by any government agency. So there’s no way of knowing —outside of independent testing —whether a bottle of supplements contains what it’s supposed to.
The problems with quality control found by ConsumerLab don’t surprise Dan Hurley,a medical journalist and author of “Natural Causes,” a book on the supplement industry.
“That’s really pretty average for supplements. It’s a real crapshoot,” Hurley said. If a drug company had these kinds of lapses,it would be shut down,he said.
Although low levels of certain nutrients can be a problem,doses that exceed recommendations are especially worrisome. Several products evaluated by ConsumerLab,including some designed for children,had this issue.
ConsumerLab is a Westchester,N.Y., company that independently evaluates hundreds of health and nutrition products and periodically publishes reviews. For this test, ConsumerLab purchased a selection of multivitamins and sent them,without labels to a lab for testing. If a problem was found,the product was sent to a second lab for confirmation.
ConsumerLab focused on some of the more important ingredients, such as folic acid,calcium, vitamin A (retinol and beta-carotene),zinc,and iron. Cooperman and his colleagues also looked to see how quickly vitamin tablets broke down in liquid. If a pill doesn’t break down fast enough, the body won’t be able to absorb as much of the various nutrients.
Among the supplements that had too little of a particular nutrient were Trader Joe’s Vitamin Crusade (just 59 percent of the vitamin A advertised on the label),Melaleuca Vitality Multivitamin & Mineral (just 42 percent of the touted vitamin A) and All One Active Seniors (less than 2 percent of the beta-carotene,73 percent of the retinol and 49 percent of the vitamin A listed on the label).
Centrum Chewables had the opposite problem,with 173 percent of the vitamin A listed on the label. This is of particular concern because too much vitamin A can spell trouble.
“If you get too much vitamin A it can be toxic to your liver,” explained Dr. Michael Cirigliano,an associate professor of medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “People don’t realize that everything they put in their mouths is bioactive. Whether it’s baby aspirin or food,it has an effect on the body. People think that if you can get it without a prescription it’s safe —that’s baloney.”
One product,Alpha Betic, took twice as long as it should have to break apart in solution,found ConsumerLab. The supplement also contained less vitamin A than it should have.
Particularly worrisome were high levels of certain nutrients in some of the children’s multivitamins. For example,Hero Nutritionals Yummi Bears, if given to children at the suggested dose,would exceed recommendations for Vitamin A in youngsters aged 1 to 3. Higher levels of the nutrient in kids have been linked to liver abnormalities,bone weakening,and problems with the nervous system, Cooperman noted.
ConsumerLab found almost no connection between price and quality. Many of the cheaper pills (prices ranging between $0.03 and $0.14 per day) passed all the tests,while some of the most expensive ones (priced as high as $1 per day) failed.
Among the supplements that passed testing were several very inexpensive options,such as Equate Mature Multivitamin,at $0.03/day,Kirkland Signature Mature Multivitamins and Minerals Adult 50+ at $0.03/day and Flintstones Plus Bone Building Support at $0.14/day.
ConsumerLab also tested several pet supplements, one of which,Pet-Tabs Complete Daily Vitamin Mineral Supplement for Dogs contained lead at unhealthy levels.
Ultimately the new report is a strong argument for more regulation of the supplement industry,both Cirigliano and Hurley said.
“People are using these products more and more,” Cirigliano explained. “There needs to be more regulation.”

7 Things You Must Do The Summer Before College


The summer before college will be both exciting and stressful.  Many high school graduates will get jobs to help pay for some of their college expenses, while also trying to find time to prepare for college and hang out with friends.
In the midst of your hectic schedule, here are 7 things that you must do the summer before college.
  • 1.  Have Fun! You’ve just accomplished something big…you’ve graduated from high school and have been accepted into college, so you deserve to celebrate and enjoy yourself.  Make sure you take time out of your busy schedule to have fun and hang out with your high school classmates, especially those who have chosen different colleges than you.
  • 2.  Read Your Mail! The college you’ll be attending will likely be sending you a lot of “first-time student” information, like forms for special academic programs or activities, roommate preferences forms, housing paper work, medical and insurance documents, etc.  You should complete these forms and return them ASAP.  You want to try your best to avoid any problems come move-in day.
  • 3.  Sign-up for Pre-Orientation. A lot of colleges offer pre-orientations.  You should sign up for these sessions if you don’t live too far away from the college you plan on attending.  These sessions are a great way to meet other new freshman.  Be sure to sign-up early if you plan on attending because space if often limited.
  • 4.  Confirm Your Financial Aid. At some point during the summer, you should contact the Financial Aid department at your school to confirm exactly what scholarships, work study programs, and other financial aid you’ll be receiving.  You likely received a letter in the mail with all of this information, but it definitely won’t hurt to confirm everything with the school before your move-in date. Also, now might be a good time for you to talk with your parents about your financial situation (if you haven’t done so already)…how much will they be contributing towards your college education?  how much will you be responsible for?  how much money do they expect you to spend on trips home and other college-related activities like movies, haircuts, etc.?
  • 5.  Call Your Roommate ASAP. You should call your roommate as soon as you receive his or her name and contact information.  Yet another reason why you need to pay attention to and read your mail.  After the two of you get acquainted, then you can decide who’s going to bring what so that you don’t have duplicates.  You’ll probably only need one television, one television stand, one microwave, and one refrigerator.  So the both of you should decide who’s going to bring which of those items.
  • 6.  Pack Your Stuff. Check out my dorm checklist for a complete listing of things you’ll need to take with you to campus.  Also, check out these videos to discover things you must have in your dorm room.
  • 7.  Ship Your Stuff. Depending on what mode of transportation you use to get to college, you’ll need to determine how you’re going to get all of your stuff to your dorm room.  Some colleges make special arrangements with FedEx, UPS, or other transportation carriers.  Take some time to figure out if shipping some of your belongings ahead of time makes sense for you.

Facebook Flaw leaked millions of user account access tokens

Advertisers and other third parties had the potential to gain unauthorized access to many Facebook user accounts and profile information because of a software flaw, Symantec Corp. said Tuesday night.

Hundreds of thousands of third party applications leaked user account access tokens to advertisers and others during the past several years, Symantec said.  In April alone, when the flaw was found, about 100,000 applications were enabling the leakage, according to the company.

Facebook was advised of the flaw and fixed it, according to Symantec, but some of the leaked access codes -- called tokens -- might still be stored on log files or in applications, and could be exploited.

"Concerned Facebook users can change their Facebook passwords to invalidate leaked access tokens," Symantec wrote in a blog post describing the situation. "We estimate that over the years, hundreds of thousands of applications may have inadvertently leaked millions of access tokens to third parties."

The tokens act like "spare keys," allowing third-party applications to perform certain functions on behalf of users without requiring them to log in each time. When third-party apps are installed, users selectively grant them permission to access profile data. In certain situations, a token can be passed by Facebook to these third-party applications "potentially on purpose and unfortunately very commonly by accident" in the referrer field of Web-based data requests. That data, in turn, can be shared with other third parties.

In other words, the spare key gets around.

That would enable third parties to gain unauthorized access to profiles, photographs, and chats, and also enable a malicious attacker to post messages and mine personal information, Symantec said.

Facebook acknowledged the flaw, but told the Wall Street Journal that it had not been exploited by anyone.

"We've conducted a thorough investigation which revealed no evidence of this issue resulting in a user's private information being shared with unauthorized third parties," the firm said, according to the Journal.  No explanation of the investigation was shared.

The incident is not the first time Facebook has been accused of leaking critical data to third parties.  Last fall, the Wall Street Journal found that many popular apps were transmitting Facebook user ID information to third parties, regardless of user privacy settings.

The token leakage incident is just the latest reminder that Facebook holds a treasure trove of information about half a billion people, leaving the firm atop a mountain of private data.  The safety and security of so much information stored in one place is inherently suspect. 

"The repercussions of this access token leakage are seen far and wide," wrote Nishant Doshi, who discovered the flaw with Candid Wueest, in his blog post about the incident.

April 20, 2011 -- The 10 most prescribed drugs in the U.S. aren't the drugs on which we spend the most, according to a report from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics.

The institute is the public face of IMS, a pharmaceutical market intelligence firm. Its latest report provides a wealth of data on U.S. prescription drug use.

Continuing a major trend, IMS finds that 78% of the nearly 4 billion U.S. prescriptions written in 2010 were for generic drugs (both unbranded and those still sold under a brand name). In order of number of prescriptions written in 2010, the 10 most-prescribed drugs in the U.S. are:

·        Hydrocodone (combined with acetaminophen) -- 131.2 million prescriptions

·         Generic Zocor (simvastatin), a cholesterol-lowering statin drug -- 94.1 million prescriptions

·         Lisinopril (brand names include Prinivil and Zestril), a blood pressure drug -- 87.4 million prescriptions

·         Generic Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium), synthetic thyroid hormone -- 70.5 million prescriptions

·         Generic Norvasc (amlodipine besylate), an angina/blood pressure drug -- 57.2 million prescriptions

·         Generic Prilosec (omeprazole), an antacid drug -- 53.4 million prescriptions (does not include over-the-counter sales)

·        Azithromycin (brand names include Z-Pak and Zithromax), an antibiotic -- 52.6 million prescriptions

·         Amoxicillin (various brand names), an antibiotic -- 52.3 million prescriptions

·         Generic Glucophage (metformin), a diabetes drug -- 48.3 million prescriptions

·        Hydrochlorothiazide (various brand names), a water pill used to lower blood pressure -- 47.8 million prescriptions.

 

The 10 Best-Selling Drugs

It shouldn't be a surprise that these generic drugs are not the ones bringing in the big bucks for pharmaceutical companies. The drugs on which we spend the most money are those that are still new enough to be protected against generic competition.

The IMS reports that Americans spent $307 billion on prescription drugs in 2010. The 10 drugs on which we spent the most were:

·         Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug -- $7.2 billion

·         Nexium, an antacid drug -- $6.3 billion

·         Plavix, a blood thinner -- $6.1 billion

·         Advair Diskus, an asthma inhaler -- $4.7 billion

·         Abilify, an antipsychotic drug -- $4.6 billion

·         Seroquel, an antipsychotic drug -- $4.4 billion

·         Singulair, an oral asthma drug -- $4.1 billion

·         Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering statin drug -- $3.8 billion

·         Actos, a diabetes drug -- $3.5 billion

·         Epogen, an injectable anemia drug -- $3.3 billion

 

U.S. Prescription Drug Use: 2010 Factoids

Who's paying for all these drugs? Commercial insurance helped pay for 63% of prescriptions, down from 66% five years ago. Federal government spending through Medicare Part D covered 22% of prescriptions.

For Americans covered by insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid, the average co-payment for a prescription was $10.73 -- down a bit from 2009 due to increased use of generic drugs. The average co-payment for branded drugs for which generic alternatives were available jumped 6% to $22.73.

Other facts from the 2010 IMS report:

·         Doctor visits were down 4.2% since 2009.

·         Patients filled more than half of their prescriptions -- 54% -- at chain drugstores, possibly because of discounts on generic drugs.

·         Brands that lost their protection from generic competition led to $12.6 billion less spending in 2010 than in 2009.

·         The price increase for drugs without generic competition led to $16.6 billion more spending in 2010 than in 2009.

What Happened on AA Flight 1561?

If you listen to the passengers and crew who flew on American Airlines Flight 1561 last weekend, there's no doubt about what happened on their harrowing trip: A Yemeni man shrieking "Allahu akbar!" at the top of his lungs more than 30 times rushed the cockpit door twice intending to take down the plane and kill everyone on board.

The clammy, sweaty lone male passenger exhibited classic symptoms of what Middle East scholar and author Daniel Pipes has dubbed "Sudden Jihad Syndrome" -- a seemingly random outbreak of threatening behavior or violence by a hysterical Muslim adherent who had not previously exhibited signs of Islamic radicalization. It took at least four men to tackle and restrain Rageh Ahmed Mohammed al-Murisi. "There was no question in everybody's mind that he was going to do something," passenger Angelina Marty told the San Francisco Chronicle.

And no, that "something" did not mean enlisting his fellow flyers in a midair flash mob performance of the "Hallelujah Chorus."

Not everyone was so grounded in reality. Bleeding-heart sympathizers seriously speculated that al-Murisi had simply mistaken clearly marked lavatory doors for the clearly marked cockpit door (because, you know, it's normal to shout "God is great" repeatedly just before relieving yourself as your plane is about to land). Some federal authorities and media whitewashers proclaimed that al-Murisi's motives were "unknown."

If only al-Murisi had been screaming phrases from the Constitution. The Selective Motive Determination Machine -- the same one that rushed to pin the Tucson massacre on the Tea Party, the GOP and Fox News without a shred of evidence -- would have kicked in to full gear.

On Wednesday, a San Francisco judge denied al-Murisi bail. Unburdened by the paralyzing prissiness of political correctness, federal prosecutors noted that "Allahu akbar" was the same refrain invoked by the 9/11 hijackers over Shanksville, Pa., and by the would-be Christmas Day bomber over Detroit. Not to mention Fort Hood jihadist Nidal Hasan, the Frankfurt, Germany, jihadist who killed two U.S. airmen on a bus in March, the young Portland, Ore., Christmas tree lighting bomb plotter, every last suicide bomber across Europe, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, and every last evil al-Qaida beheader broadcast on video over the past decade.

So how, despite a massive transportation and homeland security apparatus, did al-Murisi get into this country and get on a plane? He had no keys, no luggage, $47 cash, two curious posted checks totaling $13,000, and a trove of expired and current state IDs from New York and California -- where relatives said he had not notified them that he was coming. He is young, male, brought no family with him, had no job or other discernible income, and hails from the terror-coddling nation of Yemen. Yes, the same Yemen that is Osama bin Laden's ancestral home, harbors al-Qaida operatives who are burning the "torch of jihad," and is deemed a "special interest country" whose citizens warrant increased scrutiny by DHS when they cross the border illegally.

As I reported last month, a federal watchdog revealed that TSA's counterterrorism specialists failed to detect 16 separate jihad operatives who moved through target airports "on at least 23 different occasions." Neutered by Islamophobia-phobia and an "overtime over security" mentality, our State Department consular offices' and airline security bureaucracy's stance toward the al-Murisis slipping through their snaking lines is:

Nothing to see here; move along.

At least the heroes of Flight 1561 who refused to sit silent learned the proper 9/11 lesson. "I swore to myself that I would never be a victim" after the 2001 attacks, passenger Larry Wright, one of the men who brought al-Murisi down, told reporters earlier this week. The only effective homeland security begins and ends with a culture of self-defense. Just as there are no atheists in foxholes, there are no "see no jihad, hear no jihad, speak no jihad" delusionists on airplanes with Allahu akbar-chanting flyers beating down doors.

Why Im so Tired...

Well this one is a little outdated, as you can tell from the political scenario mentioned, but it’s still one of my favorite jokes. “For a couple years I've been blaming it on lack of sleep, not enough sunshine, too much pressure from my job, earwax build-up, poor blood, or anything else I could think of. But now I found out the real reason: I'm tired because I'm overworked. Here's why: The population of this country is 273 million. 140 million are retired. That leaves 133 million to do the work. Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government, leaving 19 million to do the work. 2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Saddam Hussein. THIS VEHICLE ALMOST KILLED ME!

We've all probably had close calls with vehicles while driving. But is it me or is it happening more this year?
Well, today, as I was at a stop light, the light turned green and I started to pedal, a suburban passed me within 1 ft. at a speed of about 30 MPH. Quite fast for the light just turning green. It was on a downhill and I assume he hadn't completely stopped at the light before it turned green.
He turned into the parking lot about a 1/8 mi ahead. I wanted to politely talk to him and let him know that he almost killed a human! 
Well, he must have had a bad day, because he was in no mood to talk, and his family didn't seem too cheery either. I said "hey, we need to talk. You almost killed me." He kept walking towards the restaurant. I said "hey, is there a problem?" He said that he did have a problem, and from my interpretation he seemed more upset than just being in trouble for driving recklessly around a cyclist. He seemed to be angry in general.
As I stood in the parking lot I decided to call the police department and report the incident. A ticket can only be written if a sworn officer observes the incident and deems the driver to have committed an infraction. But, by calling the police, that particular department while have the incident documented for future reference as well as a prior "call" on the driver and vehicle.
I relayed the incident to the dispatcher and gave the license plate number. 
I called the police Dispatch back a couple of hours later and they said an officer was sent to the area. However the driver must have left by then and the officer was unable to locate the vehicle.
This isn't the first time I've had a close call recently, and so as I rode home I decided that we need more advocacy and motivation for drivers to be more careful around bicyclists. 
I will be making a website for cycling advocacy and driver safety.
Also, I will post pictures of vehicles that have driven dangerously close and/or recklessly around cyclists.
I would like to have others post their pictures and encounters as well. For now please email me your pictures and stories.
In closing I want to most of all remind you to do all that you can to be safe out there. Second, do what I did. When possible get their license plate, take pictures and call the police.
If you are reading this and you are not a cyclist, I beg you to be careful around any cyclist you see. Please slow down for them and if possible pass with at least 3ft between the two. Please don't talk on your phone and text while driving. It’s illegal in many states, but more importantly, you could hit a cyclist in a second.
